200 pilot whales killed in latest Faroese slaughter
More than 200 pilot whales have been slaughtered in Sandagerði (Torshavn) in the Faroe Islands.
The long-finned pilot whales were driven onto the 'whaling beach' and brutally killed.
The hunt, is just one of many that take place every year on the Islands, where pilot whales, as well as other whale and dolphin species are corralled into shore by small vessels.
Pilot whales live in tight-knit social groups and many are killed in front of their family members. Once driven to the beach, blunt-ended metal hooks inserted into their blowholes are used to drag the whales up the beach or in the shallows, where they are killed with a knife cut to their major blood vessels.
In recent years, concerns have also been raised about the health implications for eating whale meat which can contain high levels of contaminants.
