Big Watch Weekend 2017

Update by Anna Inman

Thanks to all Shorewatchers who took part in another exciting Big Watch Weekend!

It was great to meet up with so many dedicated Shorewatchers over the weekend, with many being rewarded for their efforts with some great sightings, including: bottlenose dolphin, minke whale, harbour porpoise, orca, humpback whale, pygmy sperm whale, Risso’s dolphin, and common dolphins.

Some of the Shorewatch Team Highlights included:

  1. Getting daily updates from Shorewatchers with their incredible sightings.
  2. Seeing Spirtle the sunburnt bottlenose dolphin making an amazing recovery.
  3. Seeing Shorewatchers sharing their knowledge and experience with new volunteers and members of the public.
  4. Attending the local event Big Watch at the broch and seeing so much curiosity from the public surrounding the event and whale and dolphin watching.

After much interest over the weekend we have organised an extra training in Spey Bay on the 5th of July.

All the data Shorewatchers collect is vital to the protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises in Scotland, so well done to everyone who took part in another very successful BWW! We hope you all enjoyed watching out and we will keep you updated with the results from the competitions held over the weekend.

Happy Watching!
