Rescuers attempt to disentangle blue whale

A rescue team attempted to removed fishing gear from around a blue whale on Monday. According to local reports, the whale, thought to be around 80ft long, appeared to be tired when spotted by a local whale-watching company off Dana Point in California.

On Tuesday, CNN reported that a new attempt would be made to remove around 200 feet of fishing lines and buoys wrapped around the tail of the whale. Entanglement in fishing gear is a major problem for whales along both US coastlines. So far there have been nearly 40 recorded whale entanglements off the west coast this year but this is the first time involving a blue whale.
