Iceland’s Left Greens reaffirm their opposition to whaling

Iceland’s Left Green Movement recently held its annual meeting and passed the following resolution on whaling: “Whaling uses inhumane methods to maintain the hobby of a few boat owners. Large amounts of public funds have been wasted to strengthen whaling by these enthusiasts.  It is now time to end.”

A public opinion poll carried out in mid-October indicates that the Left Greens are currently the third largest political party in Iceland, supported by 11.8% of the electorate (an increase of 2.2% since September). The Pirate Party leads with 34.2% support, ahead of the Independence Party (part of the current pro-whaling coalition government) which is losing ground and now stands at 21.7% public support.
