Call on St Kitts to stop backing whalers!
We’ve been working with Avaaz, the global petition website, to target the Caribbean island of St Kitts and Nevis. We want St Kitts to remove their flag from the Winter Bay, the vessel chartered by fin whaler, Kristjan Loftsson. The Winter Bay is currently moored at Tromso, Norway, laden with an estimated 1,700 tonnes of Icelandic fin whale meat destined for Japan. St Kitts is a mere ‘flag of convenience’ state of course, but a flag state has serious responsibilities for the safety of vessels bearing their flag.
For many years, this tiny island has supported Japanese whaling interests at meetings of the IWC (the International Whaling Commission), in return for fisheries aid, and now, of course, is facilitating trade in endangered fin whales. Avaaz is calling on St Kitts to stop supporting whaling – including Japan’s lethal ‘research’ in the Southern Ocean – and instead to support whale conservation.
The petition currently stands at over 976,000 – please help Avaaz with a final push to get over a million signatures!
Please sign the petition and share as widely as you can with friends and social media. Thank you!
