Possible illegal Humpback hunt in Haiti reported
Reports have come into WDC regarding an incident in Haiti involving a humpback whale.
It appears that a small humpback whale in poor health has been harpooned by local fishermen in north Haiti near Fort Liberte, approximately 9 km west of the border with the Dominican Republic. The disoriented whale entered the shallow bay at least several days ago.
The whale subsequently stranded approximately 20 miles from Fort Liberte in Caracol Bay, also on Haiti’s northern coast.
Despite efforts of the local fishermen, the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Interior, the local mayor, local police and FoProBim (local environmental NGO) staff to save the whale, she/he died about 1AM local time this morning.
We will post further updates as they become available.
