WDC, working with NGOs including AWI (Animal Welfare Institute), EIA (Environmental Investigation Agency) and ProWildlife, approached major retailers and seafood suppliers in the UK and elsewhere in Europe, asking them to audit their supply chain for the presence of HB Grandi seafood and to state clearly whether they opposed commercial whaling.
HB Grandi is closely linked with fin whaling in Iceland via their company Chair, Kristjan Loftsson. This year, Loftsson’s whaling company, Hvalur, killed 137 endangered fin whales.
Most of the big name retailers have confirmed that they are Grandi-free and almost all have an anti-whaling policy. Check out our online table and if your favourite retailer is not on the list, you may like to ask them why not?
Consumers aren’t keen to buy seafood linked to whaling either!
We also surveyed consumers in the UK and Germany. Nine out of ten people opposed Iceland’s commercial whaling. Four out of five people surveyed did not want to purchase seafood linked to whaling. This figure rose to 90% of women surveyed.
Overwhelming opposition, then, to whaling – and to seafood linked with whaling – from retailers and consumers alike. Surely alarm bells are ringing at HB Grandi, especially as profits for the first half of 2014 were 34.5% down on the same period last year?
