Hi, my name is V and I am 9 years old. I am going to be writing about getting to know WDC and raising money for them!
I was always interested in nature. I loved all animals. When I was in Florida my Mom, Dad, sister, and I went to go see manatees at a power plant. It was VERY cool!! So when I saw a book called “Dolphin Diaries” (by Ben Baglio) at the library I decided to check it out. There were three books in one. The first book was about a dolphin saving a girl and that just made me feel happy and warm!
When I was done reading the book, at the back there was a list of organizations in case the reader wanted to learn more. On the list there was Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC). I went on their website and learned a lot of new facts! I decided to donate $25 of my own money to WDC. I got a letter in the mail saying “Thank You”. I felt really good because I knew I helped beautiful marine mammals!! At the library I kept checking out marine life books.
For Christmas, my parents got me a VERY cool marine life book! I read it a lot! There are all different chapters about dolphins, whales, jellyfish, etc. I want to be a Marine Biologist when I grow up and work at WDC!!

I am back!! In this post I am going to share how I started a fundraiser for WDC.
After I donated I wanted to do more. I decided I wanted to do a fundraiser because if I could help a few whales and dolphins by donating $25 I could help more, a lot more with more money!
My mom contacted WDC to see if I could talk to someone there to learn more about how to help save whales, dolphins, and how to become a marine biologist. Monica Pepe helped set up a phone call with Karen Costa and Sue Rocca.
I spent about a half hour talking to Sue (a marine biologist). I learned some facts like……..
• Whales and dolphins have bellybuttons.
• Orcas (killer whales ) can travel 100 miles a day.
• Balloons from as far as Ohio have been found in whale feeding grounds.
• Some orca mothers teach their calves to beach themselves to catch seals and get back into the water.
• All plastic ever made still exist and we find a lot of it in our oceans.
• You can become a Marine Biologist by studying sciences, doing different internships, and volunteering.
• Sue said her favorite thing she ever did at WDC was go down to the Gulf of Mexico searching for whales after the BP oil spill.
• She explained why dolphins and whales should not be kept in aquariums and she said there were many reasons. And some reasons are whales are huge and most of the time they are in small tanks and when you think about it is really sad. Also whales and dolphins are taken from their families when they go into the aquariums! One more thing is they die from diseases in the small spaces. It is better to go on a whale watch!!
I put together a report for people to read and find out more about whales and dolphins. Karen shared the WDC logo for me to use in my report. And I shared and emailed the report with my friends and family. Then I waited to get the donations!
