Virgin broke its news about ‘The Pledge’ today, after months of consultation with a diverse group of stakeholders from inside and outside the captivity industry, including WDC and other animal welfare and conservation organizations.
We are well and truly into the thick of autumn now here at Spey Bay. The leaves are starting to change colour and fall off the trees. Walking along the River Spey our footsteps are complemented by the sounds of crunching leaves. Fungi has started sprouting up all along the woodland however I am yet to stumble across my favourite type fly agaric otherwise known as the fairy toadstool. The striking red and white colouration will truly stand out against the leaf litter on the woodland floor.
We have been watching Risso’s dolphins foraging almost every day since we arrived last weekend to conduct our annual surveys off the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. Since we were last here…. drum roll please…. our survey area in North East Lewis has become a proposed Marine Protected Area (MPA ) for these dolphins! We couldn’t be happier about this.
It was with some trepidation that I offered my help to Nick Davison from SMASS (Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme) on the morning of Monday 8th September when he called to ask for some assistance from WDC in a Minke whale post mortem at Whitehills (around 20 miles along the coast from my usual place of work, The Scottish Dolphin Centre at Spey Bay).
WDC's Sarah Dolman reports on her final days in the Azores where she helped carry out field work for a local research organization, Nova Atlantis, this summer.
In my 4 weeks on Pico we saw more pods of Risso’s dolphins than any other species! In the 15 years that the study has been underway, Nova Atlantis have photographed 1,250 individual dolphins, about 150 of which live in the survey around. The rest have a wider home range and are just passing through.

So what did yesterday’s closed-door session reveal? From the opening session it’s hard to tell.
